Whats a doll?

Dolls are the first known toys in human history and have been played with for thousands of years. Normally, they are models of humans made for children to use in their play and to give comfort.

The History of Dolls

Dolls have existed in human history since ancient civilizations in Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Some dolls have even been found in the graves of Roman children. The earliest dolls were made from the materials available at the time, such as clay, stone, wood, bone, ivory, leather, or wax. Today’s modern manufacturing of dolls originates from 17th century Germany. The most common materials used nowadays are plastic, celluloid, porcelain, fabric, or wax.

The Benefits of Dolls

Playing with dolls is a great way to support children’s communication and help them develop empathy. Using dolls in play can help children to reflect upon the world around them by getting the opportunity to practice how to handle new experiences, and feelings they encounter. Additionally, pretend-play using dolls gives children the chance to express themselves and share their thoughts with their comforting friend.

Many pedagogues agree that playing is the best way for children to learn and develop useful life skills from their very first years. Play is the basis for development, learning, and well-being for children and it gives them the opportunity to imitate, fantasize and understand consequences. Play can also challenge and stimulate children’s motor skills, communication, and problem-solving skills. Therefore, it is important to give the children time and space to play and experiment.1
